FUNDING: The project was supported by Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University and the Active Tradition Foundation in 2021-2023

DURATION OF THE PROJECT: 2021 – 2023

PROJECT COORDINATOR: Ivan Pavlyutkin

RESEARCH TEAM: Mariia Goleva, Dmitry Markov, Nina Lubinarskaya

In contemporary Russia a paradoxical situation is observed: both marriage and divorce rates are high. Meanwhile, most of sociological and psychological theories focus on the issue of divorce, its causes and consequences but do not consider marriage from a perspective of sustainability and development. This research project is aimed at developing conceptualization and operationalization of categories that allow analyzing Russian marriage paradox from the relational perspective. The theoretical part of the project involves preparation of literature reviews on the following categories: communication, reciprocity, family practices, self-sacrifice and emotional involvement. The developed theoretical model will be tested via implementation of empirical part of the research. In-depth interviews with young spouses (registered marriage) will be conducted with the usage of thematic guide and data visualization techniques. The design of the study will also illuminate the differentiation in meanings of these categories for religious (including priests) and non-religious couples. Furthermore, the following hypotheses will be considered: the importance of communication in marriage for the transitions through the stages of family life; the practices of jointness that create community in marriage; the meaning of relational reflexivity in family. Based on the results of the study, a methodology for a quantitative survey of married couples will be developed.
